Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 1000 (Foot Number 82-06-00)

The Ambassadeur 1000, specifically the 82-06-00 model produced in the early 1980s, represents a unique era for Abu Garcia. Unlike the classic round reels, this model features a lower profile and a distinct internal configuration. Proper maintenance is essential for preserving its smooth casting and longevity.

Tools and Supplies Required

  • Precision Screwdrivers: Flathead and small Phillips.

  • Wrenches: 10mm for the handle nut.

  • Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated reel cleaner.

  • Lubricants: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube (Reel Oil).

  • Parts Tray: To organize small springs and shims.

Step 1: External Disassembly

  1. Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut locking screw, then the 10mm handle nut. Pull the handle arm, tension spring washer, and the star drag wheel off the drive shaft.

  2. Side Plates: Loosen the three thumb screws on the palm side plate. Carefully pull the side plate away from the frame.

  3. Spool Removal: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the spool shaft for any debris or old, hardened grease.

Step 2: The Drive Train and Gearbox

The 82-06-00 utilizes a drive system that requires precise alignment.

  1. Drive Plate: Remove the two screws holding the gear side plate to the frame. Gently lift the plate to reveal the main gear and pinion assembly.

  2. Main Gear: Slide the main gear and the drag washers off the drive shaft. In this specific model, check the drag stack for "stiction."

  3. Pinion Gear and Yoke: Remove the pinion gear and the plastic yoke. Take note of the orientation of the yoke springs; they are small and easily lost.

Step 3: Deep Cleaning

Submerge all metal components (gears, bearings, and shafts) in your cleaning solvent. Use a soft brush to remove old grease from the gear teeth.

  • Note: Avoid soaking plastic parts or shielded bearings in harsh solvents for extended periods. Ensure every part is completely dry before moving to the lubrication phase.

Step 4: Specialized Lubrication with Deuthlon

The performance of the Ambassadeur 1000 is significantly enhanced by using high-performance lubricants.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Apply a light, even coat to the teeth of the Main Gear and Pinion Gear. Do not over-apply; a thin film is more effective and prevents "slaking" inside the housing.

  • Lightly coat the Kick Lever and the Clutch Mechanism to ensure crisp engagement when depressing the thumb bar.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • Place one drop on each of the Spool Bearings. Deuthlon’s formula provides a high-speed film that reduces friction during the cast.

  • Oil the Worm Shaft (Level Wind) and the Idler Gear pins.

  • Apply a single drop to the Handle Knob bushings for effortless rotation.

Step 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and the line guide carriage. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the worm groove before tightening the pawl cap.

  2. Gear Stack: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and springs. Slide the main gear back onto the drive shaft, ensuring the drag washers are seated in the correct order.

  3. Closing the Case: Reattach the side plate and tighten the screws. Ensure the clutch engages and disengages smoothly before installing the spool.

  4. Final Adjustments: Reinstall the star drag and handle. Tighten the cast control knob until the spool has just a fraction of side-to-side play.

Maintenance Tip

Because the Ambassadeur 1000 (82-06-00) uses specific internal alloys, using Deuthlon Reel Grease is particularly beneficial as it provides superior corrosion resistance and remains stable across varying temperatures, preventing the "crunchy" feel often found in vintage reels.
