Technical Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5001B (Model 12-00)

The Ambassadeur 5001B (Model 12-00) is a modern, left-hand retrieve powerhouse within the Abu Garcia round reel family. Hailing from the 2012 production design, the "B" designation in this series often indicates the inclusion of a line counter or specialized trolling features, making it a favorite for depth-specific freshwater and light inshore angling.

Because this model features additional mechanical complexity—specifically the gears driving the line counter—maintaining it with high-performance Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil is critical. These lubricants ensure the extra internal friction from the counter mechanism doesn't rob the reel of its smoothness or casting distance.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Specialized Cleaning

The 12-00 model requires a meticulous teardown to ensure the line counter gears are not contaminated with old, gritty lubricant.

  1. Chassis Opening: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the handle-side plate (left side). Carefully lift the side plate away.

  2. Spool and Line Counter Interface: Slide the spool out. On the 5001B, pay close attention to the gear on the spool axle that engages the line counter mechanism. Inspect these teeth for any plastic shavings or debris.

  3. Drive Train Breakdown: Remove the handle, star drag, and the side plate cover. Lift out the main gear and the Carbon Matrix drag stack. Inspect the brass teeth of the main gear; the 12-00 uses high-precision teeth that require a clinical level of cleanliness to operate silently.

  4. Deep Degreasing: Submerge the gears, the worm shaft, and the line counter drive gears in a solvent. Use a soft brush to clear the gear valleys. Ensure all parts are completely dry before introducing Deuthlon products.

Phase 2: Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

To maintain the "B" series' specialized performance, we use Deuthlon Reel Grease for mechanical durability and Deuthlon Reel Oil for rotational fluidity.

Grease: Protection for Power and the Counter Mechanism

The 5001B drive train and auxiliary gears require the high-pressure capabilities of Deuthlon Reel Grease.

  • Main Gear Teeth: Apply a light, uniform coating. This grease is designed to stay bonded to the teeth even during the high-speed retrieves used when clearing trolling lines.

  • Pinion Gear: Coat the pinion gear extensively. This reduces the friction during engagement, which is particularly important in left-hand mirrored drive systems.

  • Line Counter Gears: Apply a very small amount of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the plastic or metal gears that drive the counter. This ensures the counter advances smoothly without adding "feel" to the handle.

Oil: Enhancing Casting and Levelwind Fluidity

Components that govern the spool's rotation require the ultra-low friction of Deuthlon Reel Oil.

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft. Since the 5001B has a synchronized levelwind, reducing friction here is the most effective way to prevent the line guide from slowing your lure's descent or cast.

  • Idler Gears: These gears bridge the spool and the levelwind. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the gear posts.

  • Spool Bearings: Clean the bearings thoroughly and add exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This provides the stability needed for high-RPM rotation and protects against heat buildup.

Phase 3: Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Rebuild the Drive Stack: Place the main gear and drag washers back on the drive shaft. Ensure the line counter engagement gear is properly aligned with the spool gear before closing the case.

  2. Seat the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brakes are retracted.

  3. Side Plate Attachment: Secure the thumb screws in a staggered pattern. Do not over-tighten; the Swedish-machined threads are precise and only require finger-tightness.

  4. Final Verification: Crank the handle and watch the line counter. It should advance without any ticking or resistance. The Deuthlon Reel Grease should make the retrieve feel completely silent.

12-00 Lubrication Reference Table
