The Shimano 10NMV Level Wind Guard (TGT0049) is a critical external protective component for Shimano’s classic level-wind trolling reels. This guard (often referred to as a "Level Wind Pipe" or "Shield") encloses the worm shaft, protecting the precision-cut grooves from salt spray, sand, and accidental impact.
Beyond protection, the guard acts as a track for the line guide to slide across. A damaged, pitted, or bent guard can cause the level wind to hang up, resulting in uneven line lay or "stacking," which can lead to catastrophic line jams during a fight.

Maintenance & Lubrication Recommendation
The level wind system is the most "active" external part of your reel and is constantly exposed to the elements. To ensure the line guide slides effortlessly across the 10NMV guard, we recommend Deuthlon Lubricants:

For the Guard Surface: Apply a light film of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the exterior of the guard where the line guide assembly slides. This provides a waterproof barrier and reduces the friction that causes "chatter" during the retrieve.
