Is it normal to have some "in and out" play in the handle?

Hi. Do you mean up to down, or do you mean forward to reverse?

I took this reel apart and cleaned it up and my customer brought it back and showed me that when he would grab the handle and pull to the right (away from the side of the reel) there's about a 1/4 inch or so of movement. It's like there's too much room for the main gear assembly to slide on that post.

Hio, Mino....I'd check the brake plate's post where the driveshaft goes, and ensure that the little copper-coloured shim is on the post, under the driveshaft, and that you re-placed the e-clip on top.

The e-clip was in place but the shim was missing. I still have about an 1/16th on an inch of slop after I put the shim in. To be honest I have put 2 shims in but to no avail. Maybe it's as tight as it's going to get?

Yup... the clearance you indicate is about right. As to why two shims, that's an unknown. You could try another shim under the eclip, up top, to remove that clearance, but it may be too tight then.

Well, if you are still out there, one thing I had happen today: the post on the brake plate for the driveshaft was wobbly and loose, spinning around and around on the brake plate... that ~could~ account for the extra clearances (a nicer word than "slop") in this reel.
