Hello all! I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone could lend some help. I just picked up the above reel "used". I say "used" b/c the reel both in and out look like they've just left the store. I broke the reel down to get a line on what type of condition the guts were in, everything looked really good. I lubed the two bearings in the spool and the level wind worm. just a drop, no spillage. When I reassembled I found that the drag even when pinned all the way down does not hold very tight, i can pull line with my hand with out much issue (it does get tighter when pinned than when backed off, just not enough to stop my hand from pulling line out). I broke it back down a few more times wiping down the drag washers but still coming up with the same result (these arent the carbontex drags, those are on the way). Any idea why my drag is slipping? i have 14lb fireline on there with a little mono backing, the line isnt slipping on the spool. the spool stays put if pressure is applied to it, i've also marked the spool with a marker to see if the line is turning separate from the spool and it doesn't appear to be. I'm stumped!

Thanks again!

Joe

i think i figured it out. I threw in some ht-100's from a penn z, not a perfect fit but i wanted to experiment. i added the two fiber washers a left one of the original washers in the drag stack and seemed to solve the prblem somewhat. i'm able to lift a 5 pound weight off the floor without the drag slipping which is really all i'm looking for. im hoping that the washers i ordered that acutally fit the drag stack will increase performance.

it doesn't seem there is much range though, is this normal? i felt i needed to have the star pinned down pretty tight just to get the weight off the floor. if i lossened it slightly (maybe less than an 1/8 of a turn) it would let the line slip. how tight down do you keep your star?

Hi. With no reel in hand, accurate cause location sometimes is not the greatest. The usual culprits are the bellevilles. They are to go on top of the spacer () not ((, or )). If the previous owner left the star full down all the time, there's a chance that the bend in them is no longer a bend. Take a pair of pliers and bend them again, if they are flatted.

Next is the needle bearing spacer sleeve. Older models have one internal round end, and one internal square end. Later models have both ends squared. Square end to the bottom, round end to the top.

Last are contaminated drag washers, and array assembled incorrectly.
I'd place the factory graphite washer in first, after you take a piece of 600 sandpaper, and scuff it up, then the HT-100's, that you have scuffed off with a little brass brush from the dollar store.

Did you place a small drop of grease on the driveshaft where the main gear makes contact. If this spot is dry, and you get a fish, you will friction weld the main gear to the driveshaft.

When you re-assemble the reel, some 56/66 reels will not work unless you place the reel in cast mode before you place the transmission side back on the frame. Flip the assembly over, and see the little crescent-shaped hole under the clutch arm. use a small screwdriver to push the arm over into cast mode, so the pin on the frame has free access to the crescent shaped hole. Belleville orientation here.

thanks for the response Smile i think it was just a case of contaminated washers. i just re-attahed the handle side to the frame with it in cast mode. i'm not sure if it made too much of a difference but it sure goes on easier this way! ever since i introduced the ht-100' the drag started to work a lot better. the bellevilles were installed in the () configuration as you stated. I guess i can bend then a bit more to see if it makes any difference. thanks again!

Ken. Do you mean grease the inside hole on the main gear where the drive shaft pokes through?

Hi, No. I don't have a stepped pic. But take the gear off the driveshaft, and lube the contact point of the main gear's hub and the driveshaft, after ensuring that the post the driveshaft fits on, also has lube.

Ken D,
does this (pics you are posting) mean you've got a camera to help out your explanations?

Just curious Wink

Camera in hand, learning the ins and outs of digital format. Lots to learn re the settings. The pic above is from Nimo, in Singapore, who used to post at the SOL (stripers on line) forum, but has since moved on. Speak to the hand
