I am trying to find out what each wire does on the motor end of the above motor. I have a red, black, green, and blue wire.
I have two of these motors and am trying to make use of them as replacement motors on a custom motor set up. I do not have the original top or mount, only the motor. |

The wires other than the battery wires are something like this:
red = full positive
black = ground
blue = mid speed range
green = slow speed range
Now, I'd have to have a motor in front of me, but I beleive that's how it's wired. The blue/green/yellow are the speed range wires to the speed coil or other ranging system.
Have a look here: http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/schematics and browse for Motorguide and then find a 5 speed motor, it will show the generic wiring for it.

I checked both motors against another 4 speed and these are wired differently. All four wires on the other motor are heavy gauge. These motors will run full speed if I put power to the red and black wires. The blue wire shows no continuity to any other wire and the green has low resistance to ground. The blue wire is only 18 gauge, so that's not likely a power wire. What I need is a motor schematic, wiring it up top is no problem if I know what each wire does and how the thing was supposed to work.
How do these control speed? Is it a matter of lead selection on the switch or does it somehow use resistors in the motor itself to drop the RPMs?
My intention is to use a dash control to power these, not Motor Guide controls. The controls will be totally custom built. If the other two wires are resistor wires which connect simultaneously to the power supply to slow the motor or decrease voltage, then I'll have to use only the high speed leads and control the speed via a pulse control circuit much like a MinnKota Maximizer circuit. |

hm....the colored wires (blue, green, yellow) are connected to a 'speed coil' which does nothing more than shunt the power to the brushes, which in turn reduces the speed. There's no actual wiring schematic for the motor itself unfortunately. If you get weird readings from the colored wires, I would say the speed coil(s) are burned up.
It almost sounds like it's a 3 speed motor, being only the blue and green colored wires are present.
I fyou have an old Minn Kota var. speed box you're golden....like you said, just hook up the power wires to it and go fishin! _________________ "Keep it outta the water damnit!"
