I have a silver max that malfunctions when I try to retreive. I can't get the side plate off to look at it. Can anyone give me some advice.

there is a cross bar screw up front. loosen it and pull out to the stop. Now you can twist the left cover up at the front 1/4 turn and pull off. If it's tight, tap with rubber handle of screwdriver. Then when it's off, pull out the spool. You will now see a hidden screw that has to come out to remove the crank side cover.
