I am rebuilding a recently found abu garcia 5500D and have a question.

Is this reel the knuckle buster direct drive or do I have something in the wrong way on my rebuild. Confused

Hi. That's normal. The "D" is for direct drive. I'd all the same, check the anti-reverse dog for correct install tight leaves, with each leaf straddling the driveshaft.

With the dog in operation, you will be able to reel backwards WITH drag, instead of just freewheeling with no drag at all.

that makes sense now. just never have seen this type of reel yet.

Acknowledged, Denny.....they were all the rage dack in the day for the
American bass angling fraternity. Most parts are still the parts stream.
