Just went to the local pawn shop and saw a nice little Daiwa 732 fly reel new in the box and picked it up for $15. I figured it was a good buy and think it'd be perfect for around here on the Island. Just curious if anyone else had any of these and what they thought of the reel.

Also I picked up a Grey's GX500 reel with 2 spare spools and case off ebay for $70 and thought that wasnt a bad reel. Anyone else have any and what they think of these? May as well see what other opinions are out there

That'd be the one, seems like a nicee little reel that has abit of line capacity as well as rated up to 8 weight line too. Not a bad little pickup imo. Have you ever have any feedback on these guys with your experience?

Hi. This reel is not the greatest, unless you are aware of the flaws, which come next, so you can do workarounds.

What's going to happen, after 3 days worth of fishing, and maybe 2-3 running fish: the little click pawl will jump off and up, the poorly made gear it clicks into.

The gear wears the top edge round, so the click pawl jumps off. When you least expect it. You will also tend to lose that little round spring that holds the click pawl around the driveshaft, when you attempt to re-install everything.

There is a fix: drill another hole in the frame, and screw a shield down over the click pawl, to prevent it from jumping the click gear. File a small groove in the stopper, to allow for the hump that the spring makes on the click pawl. That will get you by, until the gear and pawl totally wear out.
That's about a year, or more, depending on how often you fish.

Then, try and locate a few more click gears, baby spings, and click pawls.

Good fixing and fishing.

hmmm, seems like that little Daiwa may be a little dickens after all... I guess its simply something else to play around with and tinker till' its perfect.

Have you had any luck with the Grey's line of fly reels or specifically the GX 500 by any chance?

Hi, no personal reports on the grey line.... Not seen or sold here in my wee town.
Are they a disk drag system? or a click pawl.

the GX 300 and GX 500 I believe are click pawls. Seem okay but nothing too fancy. I guess as long as it gets the job done its all one really needs. Seems like a nice reel which came with 3 changable spools, reel, and bag so one can't go too wrong with that

You should be fine with the grey's. Drawings from the north american rep.
may be available, hard to say. the rep is in eastern USA.

I'd also want to contact them, and see about spare parts down the road: handle paddles, center pins, click springs, dogs, screws, latches, etc.

A reminder to put a small dab of grease on the center pin, now and then.

Well, not going to lie but I still have yet to come around to making the mods just yet. I went onto an ebay binge and managed to pluck out a Penn 920, Ambassadeur 5000d, daiwa millioanire mm2000, and a classic 6000c for pretty good prices and have been toying around with them for some time now. My dad used his old 6000s into the ground so I have been refitting the above and now given him a little variety to choose from. I think in the near future I'll play around with the daiwa there and make those mods. Its a nice cheap little fly reel but I think I can make it last a while longer with those mods you mentioned
