Abu Garcia in Sweden offers a upgrade kit for the 5000 and 6000 series, you have to ship the reel to them and they install the kit! the kit includes a dual ball bearing levelwinder with two HPCR bearings, a dual ball bearing idler gear, a lightweight spool and new carbontex drag!! this for 1800SEK, about 250USD
Not sure if the parts can be bought individually!! |

Wow, that's pretty spendy. I suspect a dual ball bearing idler gear is overkill, when one will do the job.
A dual ball bearing worm may or may not be a good thing.
Carbon drag is a good thing.
Pricing for a bb worm, Abu 24756: about 14.00 before adds of stamps and tax.
Pricing for the 21680 bb on the other end of the worm about 9.00 before the adds.
Idler gear: 1117079 for 4.00, and bb 1117080 for idler: 11.00
Carbon drag washers: about 2.50 each for 7.50.
This comes to just under 45.00 USD .... That makes the lightweight spool a pretty expensive option.....By the time postage, exchange, duy, and taxes are added in, for the whole kit, in Canada, that's over 300.00.
And there's not even the best option of all shown: a ceramic pawl ! That's because Abu does not make them. There's a Swedish dude named Ulf UT reel technology, who does all these mods, that bought hundreds of pawls from Mike !!!

A dual ball bearing idler gear is not a overkill if you have a reel for very light lures, then it is a nesesity:) but for "medium" weights one ball bearing would be satisfying, and for "heavy" lures it would be overkill with one ball bearing!
I have tried UT`s idler gear with two ceramic ball bearings (Abec 7) and they are great on my amb 2500 for light fishing!
Remember that it is scandinavian prices:) in the US it would be cheaper, and this is not stock parts. The entire levelwind is made from aluminum and the bearings are upgraded! The spool is even lighter then the stock whiffel spool!
Just hoping that ABU makes this parts avalible without buying the entire kit and i hope mike can supply us with the dual ball bearing idler gear soon!!!!! |

Metal and plastics both have their applications. Get ready for a very noisy reel, as the metal gear runs against the metal worm, when folks get lazy, and don't lube them frequently.
Metal to metal tends to wear more than metal to plastic. Two dis-simalar metals may be the best way to go. Aluminum to brass, rather than brass to brass.
The safety factor of a plastic idler gear also goes away when metal is added. Get ready for very sore fingers, and sheared spool gears, which, thankfully, are still plastic in many reels, as the finger gets trapped between the frame and the line carriage. _________________

Well, it's taken that long to find a machinist that is both WILLING and ABLE to do the work. It's easy to find ONE of those qualities....try both! lol
Turns out we have another leed. He says he has successfully machined an older 7000 metal idler with 2 brgs. It is on it's way to me for inspection. If that pans out, the plastic one is next. I understand that the plastic is harder to machine accurately as it stretches during process.

Mike: would a gear such as the early 5000's work out? Metal center hub,
where the brgs would go, and nylon outer for safety? You could take stock Abu idlers, and hog them out for folks who lose teeth, so they could keep using your custom center pocket? _________________

ok...latest news, yet again....so far every machinist has the same problem...accuracy and brg compression. SOOOOO I am going to try it myself, in house.
Yes, this will probably take more time, but this way I'll get it done the way I want it, not how someone else percieves the job. _________________ "Keep it outta the water damnit!"
