i siezed up this reel in the keys and when i got home and took it apart little pieces of the friction ring fell out - i got a new one but dont know exactly where it goes - please help!

Shimano makes several 4000's , and 2-4000FD. I suspect yours is the sustain.

You are in luck. Go here. Your reel is most likely set up the same way this one is. Starting at image #12, from the top.
