edit: -- Moved to Motorguide section --
Hey I bought a stealth 300 on craigslist second hand, the price was right $20.00..

Its a Motor guide St300 30ib thrust... I had been going on top speed for about an hour on a small inflatable 3 person boat w/ two in the boat when the motor shut off and smoke came from the control unit on top fearing the worst I cracked it open and the switch had obviously burned out and a couple wires melted together. I took the pos and negative from the large winding on the motor and jumpered them to the battery and luckily the motor worked.. I tested the relay (energized) with my multimeter and power was not getting to the positive side of the motor.. I guess the relay shorted or something.. The relay's part numbers don't match that of the schematic... Any ideas what could have caused this?? I'm going to have to buy a new relay, switch and, install a fuse to keep this from happening again but its very alarming as it could have easily started a fire. The battery is a 12V deep cycle 115ah battery and according to my volt meter has 12.4 volts..
(Pls move this if I put it in the wrong section)
Thanks,

-Tom

Hi Tom.
I have seen this on other motors before. Typically it's caused by bad electrical connections.
I've found that 90% of motor electrical failures are caused by dirty or corroded battery cables. It seems that the heat caused by a poor connection at the battery is somehow transferred to the other end as well!

Those relays are discontinued by Motorguide but I have some left over
