The line guide on a abu 7000i red will pause several turns on each end. Will I need to replace the worm gear and pawl or can I get away with just the pawl. I'd like to use ceramic upgrade on the pawl but couldn't find a part number. Thanks for the help.

Hi, Geo....The factory really loads the worm with grease, which is a perfect sand trap. I would pull the worm, clean it, and check it over real well, for any signs of compromise at the crossover point on the end. If you see a new track being plowed, or a 'point' shortened, a new worm is in order.

Usually, it's just the pawl, with exaggerated crescent shaped wear on either side of the sickle. When it gets thin, there's not enough meat to track in the worm. BUT....the worm can get cacked too.

You will not find a ceramic pawl in the Abu parts stream... Mike now gets them made special, to ensure a supply. Abu never made the ceramic pawl available. Some wildcatter out there discovered that the Quantum ceramic pawl fit the Abu, and (as they say) the rest is history.

Opening the LH side of a 7i is easy: nothing "sproings" on you... 3 screws, and yer in.

NOTE: when pulling off the pawl keeper, do NOT lose the baby spring inside it.

Rock on..........Kennie Dee.

Thanks Ken for good information it's great when an expert shares. I don't cast for distance with that 7000 but I do need quick drops to the ground when jigging deep. Would I gain much with the worm brg. Upgrade? Also I needed mikes part number to order the ceramic pawl I didn't see it other than as a option in the upgrade kit. Did I miss that it might be same as many other round abu casters? Thanks again, Geo.

Hio, Geo.... The worm bearing upgrade is really entering it's element with lighter small lures/baits...a 7 is not very good with the small stuff, so I'd suggest you stick with the factory worm, and add a ceramic pawl.

Mike has done exhaustive testing on the durability of these things..by intentionally jamming the line carriage, to see what breaks. The pawl never does... the plastic gears on the idler gear, and spool do their job, (either/or) by shearing teeth first.

I can't recall if there's a part number for the ceramic pawl... I just order mine on the phone and call the ceramic pawls for the Ambassadeur.

And... as I stood up, and went rummaging for my last invoice, dated the 2nd of may, I see they are called ceramic pawl/abu, on the bill, no part number.

Best, KD
