|
|
| Hi, I have started to use my "91" Minn Kota 3hp max TM that has not been used since 2001. Worked great for a good 3 days on the lake. Then it started cutting out. Now works only intermittently. Same thing happen a year after I got it and had to replace the control board because the ribbon wire fell apart. Can't get that part anymore. I am asking if I could put a new 5 speed type switch like a 2064028 and wire that in? If so, the wires to the 3hp motor are 2 red and 2 black and the switch is marked "M’s" and "C’s". On the 2064028 switch it has red/blk/yellow/white terminals. How would I match up the 2 red and 2 black on the 3hp to the new switch. Thanks so much for you time and advise. |

Hello!
First things first...to eliminate one thing or another, take the prop off and ONE thru bolt...they are about 8" long. Look for either a white puffy or black oily residue, or water. If you see any of those then the lower unit has leaked water and will need to have new brushes and cleanup. Most likely that is what has happened.
If not, then the control board will need to be replaced.
Unfortunately installing a switch won't cut it as the switch needs a speed coil to shunt the power so the motor runs, and there is no speed coil to fit that motor.
It's a good series of motor....I own 2 (one for parts).
